Fighting toxicity in the workplace: Dos and don’ts to being a force for positivity

Not every problem at work can be solved, so find ways to focus on what you can change

Whether office politics or gossipy coworkers are the culprit, negativity can quickly seep into any workplace. It can impact overall team morale as well as your personal well-being.

Many writers and online experts recommend “leave and find a better job” when work starts to feel toxic. For most of us, that’s not really an option.

There are big and small ways that every member of a team can help make their environment more positive. Below are some actionable steps you can take to become an influencer for good and bring more positivity to your workplace.

Don’t

1. Join in the venting sessions

While complaining to your coworkers can make you feel better in the moment, sometimes excessive venting makes small problems feel much bigger than they are. Instead of dwelling on slights, focus on what is going right and work on finding solutions for what is challenging.

2. Gossip

Gossiping erodes trust and fuels toxicity within the workplace. No one’s saying you need to shut down others’ conversations, but you can avoid engaging and spreading rumors. Being a positive influence can be as easy as redirecting the topic to something less negative.

3. Stick to work

You have a life outside of work – and so do your coworkers! Ask about weekend plans, college basketball, or Beyonce’s new single. In addition to building stronger relationships, you all will also have a better understanding of why someone needs to leave early to coach their daughter’s volleyball team.

4. Embrace toxic positivity

Don’t be so focused on staying positive that you dismiss your coworkers’ genuine concerns and frustrations. We’ve talked about toxic positivity before, but invalidating others' experiences will only create more negativity. Try offering suggestions on how to address challenges constructively and compassionately.

Do

1. Set boundaries

Establishing boundaries is crucial for maintaining your mental and emotional well-being. When it’s possible, say no to energy-draining interactions and prioritize your needs without feeling guilty. This can be as simple as not checking emails on the weekends or taking time for lunch every day.

2. Enlist allies

This isn’t necessarily a one-person job. Ask others if they’re tired of the negativity and if they’re open to planning fun work activities together. By enlisting a network of coworkers, you have a better chance of making sustained change in your workplace.

3. Be a team player

Offer support and assistance to your colleagues whenever you can. A helping hand goes a long way in building positive relationships and fostering a real community. Celebrate one another’s successes inside and outside of work, and make sure to show your appreciation when they support you.

4. Focus on you

Don’t let negativity distract you from why you’re at work. Stay focused on your aspirations, whether they’re with your current employer or you if you have a larger goal in mind. Getting caught up in office politics or negativity can distract you from what matters most to you and your future.
